Repair or Replace? A Practical Guide for Every Kitchen Appliance
The single best rule of thumb is the 50% rule: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new appliance, replace it.
Age matters too. Fridges are built to last 12-15 years, washing machines 8-12, and ovens 15+ years. A three-year-old washer with a $180 pump repair is a no-brainer to fix. A 14-year-old fridge with a failed compressor probably isn't.
Also consider running costs. Modern A-rated appliances can cut electricity use by 30-40%, so a very old appliance often pays for its own replacement in a few years.
When in doubt, book a paid diagnostic — a good technician will tell you honestly if a repair is worth it, and the diagnostic fee usually rolls into the repair cost if you go ahead.
