Gas Cooker Safety in the UAE: What Every Household Should Check Monthly
Gas cookers in the UAE are extremely reliable when they're maintained and dangerous when they aren't. Here's a simple monthly checklist any household can do.
1. Look at the flame. A healthy gas flame is steady and blue. Yellow, orange or flickering flames mean incomplete combustion, which produces carbon monoxide. Book a service if you see them.
2. Smell test around the cylinder / mains connection. If you ever smell gas, shut the supply valve, ventilate the room, don't turn any electrical switch on or off, and call a licensed gas technician immediately.
3. Check the gas hose. LPG hoses have an expiry date printed on them. In UAE heat, replace them at least every 2 years — sooner if you see cracking.
4. Listen to the igniter. Continuous clicking after the burner lights, or clicking on all burners at once when you turn one on, is a wet burner cap or a failing spark module. Not urgent, but book a repair.
5. Wipe down the burner caps and crowns. Blocked ports cause weak or split flames. A soft brush and warm soapy water is all you need.
Every gas cooker should be inspected professionally at least once a year, or immediately after any move, cylinder swap or gas smell. A licensed technician will pressure-test the system, check the flame failure devices, and leave a written safety report.
