Fridge Repairing vs Buying New in the UAE: The Honest Answer
Every fridge repair conversation in the UAE ends with the same question: should I just buy a new one? Here's the honest, technician-side answer.
Under 5 years old: always repair. Modern fridges from Samsung, LG, Bosch, Siemens, Whirlpool and Hisense are built for 12–15 years of UAE service.
5–10 years old: repair if the total cost is under 40% of a new equivalent. A gas refill with leak test, thermostat, or compressor start-relay is almost always worth it in this age bracket.
10+ years old with a compressor fault: usually replace. Compressor replacement on an old fridge is close to the price of a mid-range new unit.
Cosmetic or door-seal issues: always repair. Door gaskets are cheap and dramatically improve cooling efficiency in UAE heat.
Inverter board failure on a 2–8 year old fridge: repair. Inverter boards are a AED 400–700 part and give another 5+ years of life.
The exception: if your fridge is E-rated (old, energy-inefficient), the DEWA / SEWA savings from a modern A-rated fridge can pay back a new unit in 3–4 years. A good fridge repairing technician will tell you honestly when that's the case.
